Face Lift

A face lift is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to create a more youthful appearance. It has continued to gain popularity in the United States and was one of the top five cosmetic surgical procedures in 2004. This plastic surgery is for men and women whose face and neck area has begun to sag as a result of aging. However, the ideal candidates for a face lift are those that still maintain skin elasticity and a strong bone structure.

Most face lift surgery procedures are performed on patients between the ages of 40 to 60. However, the surgery can be successful for people in their 70s or 80s or those even younger. While a face lift can improve appearance and self confidence, it is important to be realistic about the results. In some cases, results may augment one's looks significantly, though sometimes a face lift doesn't make such a dramatic difference as the patient hoped for. Before you decide to have a face lift surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with your surgeon .

A face lift is considered an invasive cosmetic procedure. Most patients are put under local anesthesia, but general anesthesia is also used. The operation can take several hours or in some cases, more than one operation is needed. Recovery time is usually between 10 to 14 days and strenuous activity must be avoided for at least two weeks.

Face lift surgery is a very individualized procedure that depends on a patients facial structure and/or a surgeon's technique. Small incisions are made in various parts around the face and neck area and the skin is separated from the fat and muscle underneath. The surgeon may trim or suction the area for contour and the underlying muscle is tightened before the skin is pulled back and stitched into place.

A patient may experience side effects after the face lift surgery including:

  • Bruising for two to three weeks
  • Swelling
  • Temporary asymmetry

As with any other surgery, a face lift may bear its own set of risks as well. These risks include:

•  Injury to the nerves that control facial muscles and feeling

•  Infection

•  Bleeding

•  Poor healing

•  Excessive scarring

•  Permanent asymmetry or change in hairline

Face lifts should be performed by a board certified plastic surgeon recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Be sure to discuss your medical history and lifestyle information with your plastic surgeon to decrease the chances of risks . In addition, patients considering plastic surgery should research all the benefits and risks of the surgery before the procedure.
