Radiesse Wins FDA Approval

January 3, 2007
BioForm Medical Inc.'s wrinkle filling formula Radiesse has gained approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to cosmetically treat facial lines and folds.

In 1992, the wrinkle filler was approved for use in facial reconstructive procedures. Now men and women who want to cosmetically enhance their appearance as well as HIV victims who suffer from facial hollowing can take advantage of the “longer lasting” alternative to other fillers, as touted by the product manufacturer.

Radiesse consists of a water-based gel made of up calcium hydroxylapatite—a biodegradable substance similar to bone. The filler is injected underneath the nasolabial folds—frown lines—or other facial wrinkles to increase thickness, recreating the natural fullness and contours of the face.
