ASAPS Announces 2006 Plastic Surgery Statistics

March 15 , 2007

Every year, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) releases statistics highlighting the latest trends in cosmetic procedures. The most recent statistics, which were released on Friday, show that plastic surgery continues to soar in popularity—with nearly 11.5 million procedures performed last year alone.

According to the statistics, Americans spent more than $12 billion on cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures in 2006. So, what were the top procedures last year?

Top 5 Surgical Procedures

1. Liposuction
2. Breast augmentation
3. Eyelid surgery
4. Abdominoplasty
5. Female breast reduction

Top 5 Non-surgical Procedures

1. Botox
2. Hyaluronic acid
3. Laser hair removal
4. Microdermabrasion
5. Laser skin resurfacing

Other Trends

Since 1997 when the ASAPS began gathering data, the number of cosmetic procedures has risen by 446 percent. While surgical procedures are still widely sought after, the number of non-surgical procedures has jumped by more than 700 percent over the last decade—in part because of improvements made with regard to their safety and efficacy.

One of the most significant trends is the growing acceptance of cosmetic procedures among men and racial and ethnic minorities. In 2006, men accounted for eight percent of all cosmetic procedures, while ethnic and racial minorities comprised 21.7 percent.
