‘Plasma’ Tool Banishes Wrinkles With Less Recovery Time

February 22, 2007
Researchers have found that an innovative ‘plasma’ device called the Portrait PSR can improve facial appearance and eliminate wrinkles with little downtime for patients.

“The healing time in our study averaged approximately five days per treatment,” the researchers said in a study. “While nearly a week of healing time may not seem to be an improvement over other minimally invasive resurfacing procedures and micropeels, the intensity of the healing process is quite minor, with makes it an attractive option for many patients.”

The FDA approved device uses energy derived from plasma and delivered through pulses to the skin to remove wrinkles and superficial skin lesions. Previous research has focused on using the device for single, high-energy treatments.

This study wanted to examine whether or not similar results could be achieved using multiple, low-energy treatments.

Eight volunteers received three low-energy treatments over three weeks. After three months, patients experienced 37 percent fewer wrinkles and a 68 percent overall improvement in facial appearance.

Researchers said that it took between four and six days for any the redness and peeling to subside. Their study is published in the current issue of Archives of Dermatology.
