New Lipo Technology Zaps Fat, Tightens Skin
Feb 8 , 2007
Liposuction is the most popular cosmetic surgery in the United States, with more than 400,000 procedures performed in 2005. Now, those seeking to zap stubborn areas of fat have a new option known as SmartLipo.
The recently FDA approved technique involves the use of a smaller cannula (hollow tube used to remove fat) and laser to target isolated pockets of fat. Unlike traditional liposuction, SmartLipo actually liquefies the fat so that it can be drained or reabsorbed by the body.
Because the fat is liquefied—and doesn’t come out in clumps—patients experience less trauma such as bruising and blood loss. Also, the procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and the tiny incisions made for the cannula don’t require any stitches.
Perhaps the greatest advantage of SmartLipo over traditional lipo is that it shrinks and tightens loose skin, creating a smoother, firmer appearance.
“The heating up of the laser causes some changes in the collagen underneath the skin and there’s the tightening effect that is obtained,” said Dr. Daniel Man.
SmartLipo costs about as much as traditional lipo—approximately $3,000 per targeted area. Patients should only choose a surgeon trained in the technique, since improper or inadequate training can result in laser burns.
