Plastic Surgery Society Issues Liposuction Guidelines

August 10, 2006

When liposuction was introduced at an Aesthetic Society annual meeting in 1980, it was greeted with skepticism. Now, more than 20 years later, liposuction is the most popular cosmetic procedure performed in the United States.

“In the past twenty years, body contouring has become more sophisticated. An aesthetic surgeon can now customize a plan for optimal patient outcome,” said Dr. Felmont F. Eaves, chair of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) Body Contouring Committee.

Liposuction vs. Liposculpture

In addition to liposuction, which has traditionally been used to remove stubborn pockets of fat in the thigh, abdomen, and buttock areas, individuals also have the option of liposculpture – a growing trend that allows those who are usually fit to enhance features.

Also known as micro-liposuction, liposculpture specifically targets areas that were previously off-limits for traditional liposuction techniques, including the face, neck, spine, ankles, and more.

Liposculpture is technically more challenging than liposuction. Still, they are both surgical procedures that demand the skill and experience of a qualified plastic surgeon. The ASAPS recently issued the following guidelines for individuals considering these procedures:

  • Do not choose a surgeon based on the cost of the procedure. Only surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery should perform surgical procedures like liposuction.
  • Make sure that your expectations regarding the outcome of liposuction or liposculpture are realistic.
  • Disclose to your surgeon all medications you are taking, prescription and non-prescription, as well as any medical conditions you might have.
  • Make certain that you fully understand the risks and benefits associated with the procedure you are considering.
  • Ask where the procedure will be performed. Surgical procedures should always be performed in properly accredited or licensed facilities.

Get the Statistics:

Every year there are hundreds of thousands of people who choose plastic surgery to enhance or improve a particular aspect or feature.

Aesthetic plastic surgery is growing in popularity amongst both men and women. A survey was performed showing that 34% of American women would consider cosmetic plastic surgery at sometime. This figure is a 3% increase in opinion from the survey one year ago. The survey also found that 55% of Americans approve of cosmetic plastic surgery.
