Another Injectable Filler Approved By FDA

September 8, 2006
Injectable wrinkle fillers represent one of the most sought after cosmetic treatments in the United States. Last year, more than 1 million Americans received injectable treatments with hyaluronic acid and other dermal fillers. Now, Americans have another option.

This week, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) welcomed the approval of a new dermal filler – Radiesse™. According to the ASDS, Radiesse is especially helpful for treating deep folds and wrinkles on the face.

“Radiesse gives dermasurgeons another effective non-surgical tool to treat the deepest wrinkles and provide optimal facial contouring,” said Alastair Carruthers, ASDS President-Elect.

Radiesse also provides an additional treatment option for individuals afflicted with lipoatrophy, a damaging condition distinguished by sunken facial features that is a common characteristic of HIV patients.

“This is an important step for the many people with deep facial wrinkles and those diagnosed with HIV who suffer from facial wasting. It will help bring more fullness, shape and contour to their faces,” said Gary D. Monheit, ASDS President.

An injectable gel, Radiesse contains as its active ingredient an eco-friendly, man-made material called Calcium Hydroxylapatite, which is a substance similar to that naturally found in the body.

“It is an excellent complement to the existing fillers available to us and an important advancement in facial rejuvenation,” said Carruthers.

The ASDS warns, however, that all dermal fillers should only be injected by trained and skilled cosmetic or dermasurgeons.

“There is a tendency for doctors with no cosmetic training and even non-physicians to jump on the bandwagon. However, patients should be aware that aesthetic results with soft tissue fillers are skill-dependent,” Dr. Monheit said.
