Eyelash Transplant Procedures: The Next Big Thing?

October 26, 2006

Long, sweeping lashes are one of those must-have features for women around the world. Now, a new procedure known as eye transplant surgery is helping women achieve thick, luscious lashes – permanently.

Proponents of the procedure are touting it as the next big thing in cosmetic surgery. “This is a brand new procedure for the general public (and) it is going to explode,” said plastic surgeon, Dr. Alan Bauman.

“Longer, thicker lashes are an ubiquitous sign of beauty. Eyelash transplantation does for the eyes what breast augmentation does for the figure,” he added.

The Technique

Using a transplantation technique comparable to that used in balding men, the surgeon removes 30 to 40 hair follicles from the back of the scalp and then sews them onto the eyelids.

The technique is known as the “plug and sew” technique and was initially used to restore lashes to patients who had suffered burns or birth defects. Today, approximately 80 percent of all eyelash transplant procedures are strictly cosmetic.

Plastic surgeons say that the procedure is not for everyone, however. The transplanted eyelashes do require some upkeep since they continue to grow, just as the hair did when it was on the scalp.

The procedure requires local anesthesia and light sedation and generally costs $3,000 per eye. To learn more about eyelash transplant surgery or to contact a board certified plastic surgeon near you, please contact us.
