Diamonds Aren't Just A Girl's Best Friend

February 13 , 2006
Diamonds have long been hailed as a girl's best friend, but are they also a cosmetic surgeon's? A new, diamond laser scalpel is the most recent innovation making its way into operating rooms across the country and quickly becoming plastic surgery's favorite gem.

The scalpel, which emits laser energy through a diamond blade, has a clean, non-serrated edge 40 times sharper than a conventional scalpel made of steel.

“We can make a cut and save time by making a very sharp instantaneous cut and not having to deal with the bleeding that slows us down during the operative time. More importantly, we get such a clean cut that really the healing is much quicker than would be expected with traditional scalpel technique,” said Dr. Scott B. Wells.

The innovative tool is primarily used in cosmetic eye surgery to help patients recuperate more rapidly.

“The diminished bruising, the diminished swelling allows a patient to go back to work almost immediately,” Dr. Wells said. “We take the sutures out at four days, and almost immediately, most patients are walking around. No one even knows they had surgery.”
