Clear Nasal Obstructions With Plastic Surgery

September 22, 2006
A new study published in the current issue of the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery finds that plastic surgery can help clear nasal obstructions, which cause difficulty breathing.

Nasal obstructions plague millions of Americans and represent one of the most common reasons for doctor's visits. Septal deviation, valve insufficiency, and turbinate hypertrophy are all types of nasal obstructions that block airflow.

According to the recent study, a procedure known as ‘functional rhinoplasty' can correct nasal obstructions such as these, making it easier for patients to breathe.

Researchers evaluated 41 patients who underwent functional rhinoplasty at the University of Washington School of Medicine's Cosmetic Surgery Center. The patients were asked to complete a questionnaire ranking the severity of their nasal obstructions pre- and post-surgery.

The ranking scale ranged from zero to 100, with higher numbers signifying more severe nasal blockage. Researchers found that within less than a year of surgery, patients reported a significantly lower severity score – almost 43 points lower, dropping from 58.4 to 15.7.
