Experts Caution against “Backroom” Cosmetic Procedures

May 17, 2006
Experts with the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery are cautioning consumers about the risks of undergoing injectable cosmetic procedures performed by unqualified practitioners. Patients who undergo cosmetic procedures in homes, hotels, and beauty salons are at a greater risk for pain, disfigurement, and even death.

The Problem

Injectable fillers are used to enhance the features of the face and the contours of the breasts, buttocks, and hips. When administered in non-clinical settings, these cosmetic procedures are most often performed by unlicensed and/or unqualified providers using dangerous filler materials. Some patients have been injected with unsafe and ineffective fillers such as silicone and baby oil.

One California woman died after she received an injectable cosmetic procedure in a beauty salon. Unbeknownst to her, the injectable she received was cooking oil.

Experts say that lower income patients and those for whom English is not their primary language are often targeted with false advertisements, low cost offers, and luring deals for unsafe procedures.

The Experts' Advice

Don'ts:

  • NEVER receive injectable cosmetic procedures without the advice of a doctor or board certified plastic surgeon.
  • Never undergo cosmetic procedures in homes, hotels, or salons. They are often performed by unqualified providers using illegal or unsafe filler materials.
  • Never choose a cosmetic surgery professional based solely on low cost.

Dos:

  • Only undergo cosmetic procedures in an accredited facility.
  • Only use a board certified plastic surgeon to perform cosmetic procedures.
  • Do your homework: learn about your desired procedure, location, and provider before undergoing any type of cosmetic procedure.
  • Check with the American Board of Plastic Surgery to determine if your practioner is qualified to perform your desired procedure. All of the plastic surgeons represented on www.plastic-surgery-resource.com are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
