Buttock Augmentation: Growing Trend

July 7 , 2006
While ample backsides were once appreciated mainly by African American and Latino cultures, the popularity of the bottom has become increasingly widespread—particularly among Caucasians. Now, with the latest advances in cosmetic surgery, those who want a fuller derriere can undergo buttock augmentation procedures.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, buttock augmentation procedures have soared over the last several years. The number of patients undergoing buttock augmentation has increased a whopping 285 percent from 2002 to 2005.

“What’s happened is Caucasians now are feeling more and more pressure because it just looks so odd not to have a buttocks,” said Anthony Griffin, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon who pioneered the Brazilian butt lift. “And of course, there is pressure on people of color because they feel like they should have one.”

Although the butt has become an icon of pop culture, there still remains distinct cultural differences in the look women are opting for. For example, African American women often want more emphasis on the behind while white women don’t want so much. Latinas and Asian women typically fall somewhere in between.

Some women who have undergone buttock augmentation surgery claim they’re new derrieres are opening doors. Twenty-seven-year-old Annah Carlson, a deejay in Atlanta, said, “I love it because I can use it to get people’s attention.”

And with the new acceptance of an ample butt, more men are willing to share their fondness of the behind. “I do like women who are voluptuous. I think it’s a pendulum. We are embracing our differences more than we did before,” said John Henry, a 28-year-old Caucasian man.

With the growing popularity of buttock augmentation procedures, it seems as if the butt is hurriedly replacing the breast as the newest body feature to emphasize.

If you have questions about any of these or other minimally-invasive procedures, consult with a board certified plastic surgeon .
