Body Contouring After Significant Weight Loss
June 23, 2006
Weight loss procedures such as bariatric surgery and gastric bypass have skyrocketed in the last few years—up 22 percent from 2004 to 2005. However, most patients who drop a significant amount of weight post surgery will need additional procedures to nip and tuck the excess skin.
New body contouring techniques offer safer, more improved options for formerly obese patients who wish get rid of the extra folds of skin that remain after dropping a lot of pounds. But patients must be aware that body contouring requires a number of surgeries and a staged approach to getting the body they always wanted.
During stage one of body contouring surgery, a skilled plastic surgeon will remove excess skin from the stomach, buttocks, and thighs. Three months later, the patient will undergo a second procedure to lift and contour flabby areas such as the underarm, neck, breast, face, and back.
“This staged approach improves the patients' quality of life, has wonderful aesthetic results, and has proven to be safe and effective,” said Dr. Berish Strauch, plastic surgeon and author of an article detailing mid-body contouring lift techniques.
“It is truly gratifying to be able to give these patients the body they dreamed of having.”
