New Study Shows Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery
September 14, 2007
A new study conducted by the New York –Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center and the New York School of Medicine, suggests that breast reduction surgery can have positive benefits for smaller-framed women.
The study concluded that when surgeons remove under 500 grams of tissue per breast, women with small builds tend to have an increased quality-of-life.
Researchers Conduct Study
The study, which will appear in an upcoming issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, found that when surgeons removed approximately 500 grams of tissue per breast, their patients were relieved of back, neck, and shoulder pain.
The 59 patients studied, all came to Dr. Nolan S. Karp of the NYU Medical Center complaining about pain relating to the large size of their breasts.
Three months after the doctors removed the breast tissue from each of these women, they were asked to rate their quality of life on a scale of 1 to 5.
The researchers found that most women were rating their lives as being drastically better than before they had the operation.
“Women were greatly relieved that they were more able to engage in healthful activities such as running or playing sports-demonstrating that breast reduction surgeries have even wider health implications,” explained one of the researchers, Dr. Jason Spector.
