The prospect of levying taxes on cosmetic procedures in the state of California is eliciting a negative response from surgeons and dermatologists. Cosmetic services such as breast implants, face-lifts, BOTOX, and other injectables, which could be considered luxuries, are believed by some to warrant the same tax as any consumer product. Doctors argue however, that this method of taxing solely cosmetic procedures bears a number of substantial problems.

Individuals wish to get plastic surgery for a variety of different
reasons, but plastic surgeons do not want patients to use surgical
procedures in order to help with depression. Not only can plastic
surgery fail to be used as treatment but can worsen the emotional
difficulties. Patients think that after a plastic surgery procedure
they will feel better, and for the right patient it can significantly
improve their conditions. Someone who has realistic expectations
about what a plastic surgery procedure can do in terms of enhancement
and maintenance will find their surgical goals are attainable. Research
shows that plastic surgery can help to increase self-esteem, but
only with the right candidates. Qualified plastic surgery patients
should understand surgery is an improvement in a certain feature
but not an answer.

A recent survey found 79% of U.S. men and women would not be embarrassed
if people besides a family member or a close friend knew they had
cosmetic plastic surgery. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic
Surgery president, Dr. Malcolm D. Paul, thinks, were
not hiding the fact that the way we look on the outside is important.

The media had a shock when lawyer Greta Van Susteren, formerly with
CNN and now Fox chose to get cosmetic plastic surgery on her eyes.
The compliments Van Susteren received on her surgical procedure
ranged from former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright to Geraldo
Rivera, showing the growing acceptance people have for plastic surgery.
Van Susteren talks openly about the cosmetic surgery touchup now,
and she encourages women considering plastic surgery to be realistic
about the results, healing time, and potential side effects. She
has also become an advocate of plastic surgery safety by advising
people of becoming fully aware of doctor
credentials.

Plastic surgery does not always go as planned and patients end up
coming out of a surgical procedure appearing worse then when they
went in. One California plastic surgeon expert, Stanley Frileck
attributed this to the fact that more complications can arise from
a plastic surgery procedure because physicians who have not been
properly trained have performed it. The number of botched
jobs that the surgeon has had to fix has grown 20-30% in the
last 4-5 years according to Frileck. He feels that the poor results
are due to a lack of proper aesthetic judgment and recommends anyone
who is choosing a plastic surgery procedure to find
a board certified surgeon or else risk a bad surgery. (Entertainment

Some board certified plastic surgeons limit the plastic surgery
procedures performed on smokers because of the added risk smoking
puts on pulmonary complications and interference with wound healing
that can reduce the quality of the results. A University of Texas
Southwestern Medical Center survey report found that of the 955
board certified plastic surgeons surveyed, 90% of them would perform
an elective plastic surgery procedure on smokers, with 50% of this
group limiting the type of procedure performed. Plastic surgeons
sometimes require patients to quit smoking prior to the surgery
to avoid increasing the risk factor involved. (ASPS)

An article by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons emphasize
the importance of any potential plastic surgery patient to do their
research on the plastic surgeons credentials before choosing
just anyone. According to the president of the American Society
of Plastic Surgeons, Edward Luce, Board-certified plastic
surgeons are highly trained to produce a successful outcome, while
ensuring maximum patient safety before, during, and after surgery.
The article indicated that choosing a board certified plastic surgeon
is having the knowledge that the surgeon graduated from an accredited
medical school and completed at least five years of additional residency,
three years of general surgery, and two years of plastic surgery.
With the increase in plastic surgery procedures it is important
for any patient to be informed and ensure their safety by choosing
a board certified plastic surgeon. (ASPS)

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons found that over 7.4 million
people had cosmetic plastic surgery in 2000. Walter Ernhardt, ASPS
president, find that patients are starting to take advantage of
what board certified plastic surgeons are able to do and using less
invasive procedures earlier in life to maintain the youthful look
it can provide. In 2000 a chemical peel was the most popular non-surgical
procedure with more than 1.1 million people going in for the treatment.
