Plastic Surgery Suggested After Bariatric Surgery
May 25, 2007
Surgeons claim that bariatric surgery is the most common surgery in the United States to treat obesity. The benefits of receiving the surgery are great for those who are battling severe weight problems. However, less than 15% of patients receiving the surgery are returning to the operating room for follow up plastic surgery.
“Plastic surgery can have a positive impact on your body’s overall condition after getting bariatric surgery,” states the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the world’s largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons.
Plastic Surgery Benefits
Bariatric surgery often causes most patients to acquire excess skin that, if left untreated, can lead to chronic infections. The natural re-shaping of the body’s skin after such a complex surgery also has been known to cause physiological health related issues and can oftentimes be physically restraining.
“Removing excess skin is not only necessary to achieve optimal body shape, but it’s also helpful in improving overall health and quality of life,” explains ASPS chair of the Post Bariatric Task Force and MD, Peter Rubin.
Help Maintain Body Shape and Health
An increasing number of patients are opting to enhance their overall health by going under the knife for bariatric surgery. The ASPS strongly recommends to these patients that after surgery they get body contouring plastic surgery. They suggest the following guidelines for those looking to achieve their ideal body:
- Maintain a stable weight for three consecutive months
- Be as close to your goal weight as possible
- Have a surgery plan with your plastic surgeon
