African Americans Show Facial Aging Earlier
March 19 , 2008
New reports claim that even though African Americans have skin that may appear more youthful long term, they are the first race to show signs of aging.
They supposedly show facial aging in the outer corner of their eyes before Caucasians do.
These new findings can be found in this month’s issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, which is the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
How Eyes Vary
The reasoning behind the early signs of aging is attributed to the fact that African Americans require extra attention to their eyes due to their ethnic characteristics.
“African Americans have a slight slant to their eyes, much like Asians do but not as pronounced,” explains Julius Few, co-author of the study conducted on the subject.
Few goes on to say, “During aging, we found not only do the outer corners of the eyes of African Americans droop lower that Caucasians, they also droop sooner.”
The Eye Slant and Aging
In the study, the median eye slant for African American women age 45 years or younger was reportedly three degrees.
This number decreased to one degree for those over the age of 45.
The median eye slant in Caucasian women who were 45 years old or younger was 1.3 degrees and decreased to zero for those above the age of 45.
