AACS Consumer Perception Survey Reveals Surprises

The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery has announced the results of this year's Consumer Perception Survey, which gauges current perceptions on all things cosmetic – from envied celebrity features to popular myths and misconceptions about cosmetic surgery.

Some of the highlights and surprises revealed by the survey include:

  • 20 percent of Americans see cosmetic surgery in their future
  • Five out of six survey participants considered personal appearance crucial to professional success
  • Jennifer Aniston's eyes topped the list of most coveted celebrity feature for women with 46 percent of the votes
  • Nick Lachey's sculpted abs beat out Matthew McConaughey's pearly whites as the “must-have” feature for men with 51 percent of the votes
  • 33 percent of consumers said they would admit only to those who asked that they'd had a cosmetic procedure, while 18 percent said they'd disclose that information to close friends and family
  • 46 percent of Americans said they would spend their disposable income on cosmetic surgery before an expensive vacation or luxury car
  • 18 percent of consumers surveyed cited as the primary reason for foregoing cosmetic surgery a fear of pain, while 54 percent said that cost was the discouraging factor

Aesthetic plastic surgery is growing in popularity amongst both men and women. A survey was performed showing that 34% of American women would consider cosmetic plastic surgery at sometime. This figure is a 3% increase in opinion from the survey one year ago. The survey also found that 55% of Americans approve of cosmetic plastic surgery.
