2005 Plastic Surgery Statistics

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has recently reported that 11.5 million non-surgical and surgical cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States in 2005. This number represents a one percent increase in surgical procedures and a four percent decrease in non-surgical procedures, in comparison with 2004 statistics.
Since the beginning of cosmetic surgery data collection in 1997, cosmetic procedures have seen a 222 percent increase in numbers . The most commonly sought non-surgical procedure of 2005 was Botox . Liposuction boasted the most clients of all cosmetic surgical procedures.
“The surgical portion of the statistics show interesting results in the breast augmentation and breast lift areas ,” commented Dr. Mark L. Jewell, president of the Aesthetic Society. “While some procedures are down, these areas continue to increase; breast augmentation by nine percent and breast lift by 23 percent.” The doctor also commented on the possible increase that may occur in breast augmentation surgery when the FDA approves silicon devices for use in 2006.

Statistically, women represented 91 percent of all plastic surgery procedures performed in 2005. Men still however, comprised over one million of all cosmetic procedures , favoring treatments such as liposuction, Botox, rhinoplasty and laser hair removal. Women also ranked liposuction, Botox and laser hair removal in their top five types of cosmetic procedures, in addition to breast augmentation.
Between the women and the men, Americans spent a grand total of just under $12.4 billion on surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures . Forty-eight percent of these procedures were performed in doctor's offices, 27.9 percent in surgery centers, and 23.8 percent in hospitals.
Minorities represented 20 percent of all cosmetic procedures in 2005.
These results were compiled by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery through observing the results of more than 14,000 mailed questionnaires
